Glenbrook Players
Summer of the Seventeenth Doll
by Ray Lawler
Directed by Madeleine Sheehy
September 2006
Director's Note:
'The Doll is a play about growing up. It is about growing up and growing old and failing to grow up.' (Katherine Brisbane) This play written and set in 1950's Australia, has become a landmark in the history of Australian theatre. It is one of the first successful plays that was written about Australia, for Australians and using the Australian vernacular. The characters are real working class Aussie battlers struggling to make sense of their past and what may happen in the future. The quintessential themes of mateship, freedom and rugged individualism make this play as relevant today as it was in the 1950's.
The Doll had special significance for me and I had wanted to direct it for a number of years.
I first worked on a production of the play with The Alice Springs Theatre Group when I was in High School and enjoyed watching my mother portray the character of Emma. I then tought it to HSC Drama students and felt it was important for them to see the play on stage to assist them in their understanding of its characters and importance to the development of truly Australian theatre.
I enjoyed working on this production immensely and had my outstanding cast and crew to thank for that.
Our rehearsals progressed well and we presented a truly professional production for all to enjoy.
