A rollicking play full of one liners and eccentric characters, "Auntie Mame" transports the audience to the glamour of 1920's Manhattan, just before the stock market crash.

The title character of Mame, played by Margaret Bell is a wonderfully self centred and loving person who inherits her nephew Patrick after the untimely demise of her only brother. Patrick is thrown into the chaos of Mame's modern and eccentric life and embraces his new experiences with great enthusiasm. Not to be one to let a small thing like the stock market collapse get her down, Mame throws herself into a serious of unsuccessful jobs before finding a wealthy Southerner to marry and travel the world with. The scenes which feature the Southern family - a bunch of ghastly and bitchy people - are some of the funniest in the play, culminating in a song and dance number which is a real treat.

Patrick grows up to be a man during the play which stretches from the 1920s through to the early 1950's. There are many strong support roles in the play, not least Mame's dear friend (and sometimes enemy) Vera who spends much of her life drinking or recovering from her last bout. Mame's manservant, Ito, a loyal but very odd Japanese character was possibly the inspiration for the Pink Panther's Kato character.

With sumptuous sets and gorgeous costumes 'Auntie Mame' is a visual feast as well as a funny and poignant play.
